In 2000, crowds wait to buy the latest Harry Potter book at a Maryland Barnes & Noble store.
NEW YORK—In the massive new Barnes & Noble superstore on Manhattan's Upper East Side, generous display space is devoted to baby blankets, Art Deco flight clocks, stationery and adult games like Risk and Stratego.
The eclectic merchandise, which has nothing to do with books, may be a glimpse into the future of Barnes & Noble Inc., the nation's largest book chain.
For 40 years, Barnes & Noble has dominated bookstore retailing. In the 1970s it revolutionized publishing by championing discount hardcover best sellers. In the 1990s, it helped pioneer book superstores with selections so vast that they put many independent bookstores out of business.

Kindle for Android Coming this Summer
May 18, 2010
This summer Amazon.com will release Kindle for Android, a free e-book application that adds e-book support for Google’s popular and fast growing mobile phone operating system. Amazon’s proprietary Kindle e-book format can now be read on a wide variety of devices including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Blackberry as well as on PC and Mac laptops and desktops.
삼성전자, 애플에 대한 me too strategy과 KT에 대한 exclusion strategy을 쓰는 것으로 보인다.

Marketing 3.0: From Products to Customers to the Human Spirit / Kotler, Philip

//하//

The Wall Street Journal got the adrenalin pumping. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), the paper reported last week, plans to enter the digital book marketplace this summer, "throwing the search giant into a battle that already involves Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc."
If that doesn't get your blood pumping, what would? A Google vs. Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) vs. Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) dust-up is the kind of tech war we haven't seen since the early PC makers slugged it out for supremacy on the desktop. Pass the popcorn, and get ready for blood to be spilled.
Except the Journal may have utterly missed the point. What Google is doing may well have profound ramifications on when and how we acquire books. But Google may not be picking any kind of fight with Apple et al. What it may be doing instead is rewriting all the rules of book buying.
The reasons why Google may not be eyeing a beatdown of Amazon or Apple are multiple. According to New York-based publishing consultant Seth Gershel: "Apple gets an e-book competitor, but they want to sell devices and Google's entry does not diminish this."
Indeed, Google may assist Apple's strategy, because a stated mission for the so-called Google Editions is device neutrality -- any book ought to be readable on any device with a browser, and that very well could include the iPad. If Google creates iPad content, Cupertino has plenty to applaud.
As for Amazon, yes, Google may be intruding on its turf. Amazon wants to sell books, not so much devices, says New York media consultant Brian O'Leary, who points to the Kindle app's proliferation across multiple devices as a proof of Amazon's indifference to selling hardware.
Whenever Google sells a book that can be read on a Kindle, that definitely picks Amazon's pocket, says O'Leary. Still, a more immediate benefit for Amazon in that transaction may be that it wins in its format war versus Apple. Besides, he adds, Google does not think like a retailer -- it poses little threat to Amazon there.
Google's plans herald two certain winners, according to Chris Kenneally, director of author relations at the Copyright Clearance Center. He points to book publishers and authors, mainly because the more players there are in e-book publishing and distribution -- and Amazon, Apple, and Google make a dazzling trio -- the more negotiating power reverts back to the content creators and owners. This, he suggests, is win-win-win for copyright owners and readers alike.
No losers so far.
Let’s probe to the next level. Best guesses are that Google already has accumulated rights to some 12 million books. O’Leary thinks Google Edition books probably will reside in the cloud, not on devices, "and this will make digital rights management much more effective." The only cloud player at present is the nascent Kobo from Canada, a non-factor in the US market.
Put the book in a cloud, accessible only by a validated Google account holder, and "it gets much easier for Google to protect that content against unauthorized copying," notes O'Leary, who adds that textbook publishers in particular will rejoice. They are under mounting pressure to make their content available as lower-cost e-books, but real worries about mass copying have put the brakes on their efforts. Google Editions may change that.
Google also may want to reshape how and when we buy books, says O'Leary. What he envisions is a Google search for, say, cats and fleas. Traditionally, results would be a list of Web pages with information on that topic. But what if, with Google Editions, Google decides to mix in a link to a book about cat health, with options for immediate e-book delivery, or delivery of a print-on-demand copy the next day?
"Amazon is good at selling us books when we look for books, but Google may be positioning itself to sell us books when we are not looking for a book, just for information on a topic," says O'Leary. "But when a book is the best source of information, Google appears to want to position itself to sell it to us."
And that changes all the rules.

The sickliest part of the books business is the shops that sell them
Mar 31st 2010 | NEW YORK | From The Economist print edition
THESE are not easy times for booksellers. Borders, a big American one, ditched its boss in January and has closed stores, but is still at risk of collapse, some analysts say. The British chain of the same name, which it once owned, failed last year. Barnes & Noble, the world’s biggest bookseller, appointed a new boss last month to help it confront the triple threat of the recession, increased competition and e-books.
The struggles of booksellers can be explained in part by a surge in competition. More than half of book sales in America take place not in bookshops but at big retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, which compete to peddle bestsellers at ever steeper discounts. Online retailers, too, are wreaking havoc. In 2009 Amazon sold 19% of printed books in North America, reckons Credit Suisse, compared with Barnes & Noble’s 17% and Borders’ 10%. By 2015, the bank estimates, Amazon will sell 28%.
Booksellers are labouring to raise their profile online and win back the customers they have lost. Barnes & Noble’s online sales rose by 32% to $210m in the quarter ending in January, compared with a year earlier. It has started selling its own e-reader, called the “Nook”, and digital books to go with it.
Will bookshops disappear completely, as music shops seem to be doing? Most are pinning their hopes on giving people more reasons to come inside. “Consumers will need some entity to help them make sense of the morass,” says William Lynch, the new boss of Barnes & Noble, which plans to put a renewed emphasis on service, including advice on e-books. Many shops have started to offer free internet access to keep customers there longer and to enable them to download e-books. Other survival strategies include hosting book clubs or other community groups and selling a wider variety of goods, such as wrapping paper, jewellery, cards and toys.
Independent bookshops face a particularly grave threat, because they are unable to match bigger rivals’ prices. Many are branching out by offering new services, such as creative-writing classes. BookPeople, a bookshop in Austin, Texas, runs a literary summer camp for around 450 children. Steve Bercu, the shop’s co-owner, says that independent booksellers can still thrive, provided they “reinvent themselves”.
The Future of Bookstores
The book industry is going through changes, influenced by trends like the transition from print to digital. And it looks like no part of this industry is being influenced like bookstores. From independent bookstores and used bookstores to big bookstores - no one seem to be immune to these changes.
http://www.ecolibris.net/bookstores_future.asp
Google Inc. plans to begin selling digital books in late June or July, a company official said Tuesday, throwing the search giant into a battle that already involves Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc.
Google has been discussing its vision for distributing books online for several years and for months has been evangelizing about its new service, called Google Editions. The company is hoping to distinguish Google Editions in the marketplace by allowing users to access books from a broad range of websites using an array of devices, unlike rivals that are focused on proprietary devices and software.
Chris Palma, Google's manager for strategic-partner development, announced the timetable for Google's plans on Tuesday at a publishing- industry panel in New York.
Jeff Trachtenberg discusses Google plan to start selling digital books this summer, setting the stage for a battle of the online behemoth booksellers. Plus, Apple attracts antitrust scrutiny from regulators and Congress drafts a web-ad privacy bill.
Google says users will be able to buy digital copies of books they discover through its book-search service. It will also allow book retailers—even independent shops—to sell Google Editions on their own sites, giving partners the bulk of the revenue.
The company would have copies on its servers for works it strikes agreements to sell. Google is still deciding whether it will follow the model where publishers set the retail price or whether Google sets the price.
While Mr. Palma didn't go into details, users of Google Editions would be able to read books from a web browser—meaning that the type of e-reader device wouldn't matter. The company also could build software to optimize reading on certain devices like an iPhone or iPad but hasn't announced any specific plans.

Did Amazon's Social Networking Injection Just Kill the Kindle's Killer Feature?
BY Kit EatonToday
So Amazon revealed the details of its Kindle firmware update for May--a doozy if you're into reading e-books and social networking simultaneously. But with the Kindle's main charm being its status as a single purpose device, did Amazon just screw the pooch?
The Kindle firmware 2.5 has two new bigger-size fonts and better font "sharpness" which is a boost to its readability and accessibility, but the big take-away is the social networking hooks dotted throughout the code. This means you can easily share your highlighted passages or quotes with your digitally connected friends (though only up to 140 characters on the Twitter feed, folks. Keep 'em pithy!). It's far more than a tweak to the device, and it'll transform the platform into much less of a lonely user experience.
The Kindle's (2 or DX) main strengths are the e-ink display, the battery life, the Amazon ecosystem, and the massive simplicity of the single purpose device. Over time, most of these pluses have been seriously eroded. There's debate about the benefits of e-ink screens, and it's largely a matter of personal taste--the irritating slow wipe/refresh effect is annoying to some, and it precludes any serious attempts at having dynamic imagery (for smart textbook uses, for example). Apple's ecosystem for the iPad is almost as strong as Amazon's is, in e-books, has even forced Amazon to rethink its business model, and offers a huge array of extras. Even Barnes and Noble's Nook ecosystem is impressive. The battery life of the iPad roars in at around 10 hours, and that's if you're using Wi-Fi a lot, running video, and surfing the Web, all of which you can't do on the Kindle.
In fact, possibly the most saleable quality of the Kindle (and its horde of cheaper, and some may say better, cloned single-purpose e-readers) is its simplicity. If you're seriously into books, and like tech, this is the device for you. You don't want the expense and sophistication of the iPad, with its distracting social networking powers and alluring games--you just want a reliable, one-task machine. Forget all these social hooks, and the potential future horrors of push email over Whispernet.
And yet Amazon, in a desperate bid to keep up with the glamorous temptations of the tablet PC, has just sunk this one big advantage of its e-reader. Sure, you'll be able to turn these extras off...but Amazon will be bolting more facilities into the Kindle as time goes by, and they haven't even optimized the core tech of the thing yet. This is the lesson Amazon should be learning from Apple, with its initially pure-purpose iPods, and its slowness in adding in video to the iPhone: Get the killer core features first, and then add in the fancy stuff.
