NEW YORK—In the massive new Barnes & Noble superstore on Manhattan's Upper East Side, generous display space is devoted to baby blankets, Art Deco flight clocks, stationery and adult games like Risk and Stratego.

 

The eclectic merchandise, which has nothing to do with books, may be a glimpse into the future of Barnes & Noble Inc., the nation's largest book chain.

For 40 years, Barnes & Noble has dominated bookstore retailing. In the 1970s it revolutionized publishing by championing discount hardcover best sellers. In the 1990s, it helped pioneer book superstores with selections so vast that they put many independent bookstores out of business.

윌리엄 린치, 반스앤노블 신임 CEO의 행보가 범상치 않네요. 상품 포트폴리오 확장 차원에서 CD, DVD 마켓플레이스 (중고품 판매 포함)를 추가한다고 합니다. 국내에는 이미 익숙한 포트폴리오지만, 반스앤노블 자체적으론 나름의 변화네요. 기대됩니다.

Barnes & Noble Adds CDs, DVDs to Marketplace

When William Lynch took over as CEO of Barnes & Noble he promised that the company would diversify the products its sells through Barnes & Noble.com and this morning the company announced that it will begin selling new and used CDs and DVDs online through its Marketplace program. According to B&N, B&N Marketplace currently has more than 75 million items that are sold by third-party sellers.

 

“Our goal is to provide our customers with great values on a wide selection of both new and used items,” said Jamie Iannone, executive v-p of product and shopping for Barnes & Noble and B&N Digital. “Our customers will now be able to buy across books, textbooks, CDs and DVDs-- and shop great values on a wide selection of used items that are available for secure purchase through our network of trusted sellers.”

 

Under the Marketplace program, when a customer chooses a CD, DVD or book, the search result pages at B&N.com show prices for both new copies and, when available, used copies. Customers can click through the selections and decide which option is best suited for them.

 

Kindle for Android Coming this Summer

 

아마존 킨들, 어느덧 54만종이 서비스 되는군요. 안드로이드 계열까지 지원된다니 명실상부 킨들이 가장 안정적이며 범용적인 어플리케이션이 되어갑니다. 아마존 만만치 않은 저력을 보이네요. 애플은 애플에서만... 그렇겠죠..?!

 

 

Kindle for Android Coming this Summer

This summer Amazon.com will release Kindle for Android, a free e-book application that adds e-book support for Google’s popular and fast growing mobile phone operating system. Amazon’s proprietary Kindle e-book format can now be read on a wide variety of devices including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Blackberry as well as on PC and Mac laptops and desktops.

Amazon has been quick to provide Kindle support for a wide variety of devices and operating systems. And with more than 540,000 titles in the Kindle format, Amazon continues to make itself attractive to digital book consumers no matter what devices they use for reading. Indeed Amazon consumers that own a mix of mobile or computing devices continue to have access to all of their previously purchased titles and can download and synchronize notes, highlights and last read pages of their e-books on any of the devices noted above.

Consumers can sign-up for notice of the exact date of availability of the Kindle for Android download on the Amazon site.
